William Cloud was born in 1745, Front Royal, VA on the Willow
Glen Estate. Married in 1768, Jane Jones. He was a Private in the Revolutionary War, serving under the command of Capt. Joseph Bowman
in 1775-76 giving 110 days ofservice (Brumbaugh Records v.1; p.604)
His brother Daniel and cousin, Capt. William Cloud were also
patriots in the Revolution.
The publication, "Warren Sentinal" of Front Royal, VA carried this
article in 1920:
"Among the prosperous farmers in the Shenandoah Valley are the Cloud
Families. They have always been people of considerable wealth and
the best social standing of their day".
When William Cloud married Jane Jones, he became a part of the
famous MASON family of Virginia, as Jane was the daughter of James
Jones and Frances Mason.

In the Fall of 1795, William found it necessary to return to
Virginia to collect money that was due him. He never returned.
There are two accounts of what happened. One record states that
he and two companions were killed by hostile Indians at the
Licking River. Another story is that he was killed by a companion
for the money he carried.
A letter written by William's granddaughter, Margaret Cloud
Torrence, (the probable daughter of James and Sarah Ramey), tells
of the walk to Kentucky from Virginia and the purchase of 260 acres
of land for 25 cents an acre. The letter continues... "one day
Grandfather received a letter from Virginia, from some relative
asking him to come and get his share of money from an estate.
Grandfather started back to Virginia, taking a strange man as a
body-guard. They went by horseback for 700 miles. They left
Grandmother and the children, also the negros at home in Kentucky.
After they had been gone for about 3 months; the man that had left
with Grandfather returned with $3000. in a pair of saddlebags and
told Grandmother that her husband had died of the fever on the road,
about 200 miles from Culpepper, VA." The letter also said,
"...the family believed that Grandfather left Virginia with
$7,000. and the companion murdered him and took $4000.
Grandmother was never really sure what happened."
Jane owned and operated a large tobacco plantation for nearly
30 years. She obviously did very well, as she left a large
estate. Her will, dated March 16, 1832 is recorded in Burlington,
Boone Co., KY. She asks that her land, livestock and household
furnishings be sold and equally divided between her eight children.
Son Daniel was deceased and his share was to go to his children.
She stated that it was her will that son William, shall be entitled
to ten dollars only. This is the only record that there was a
son named William, so he has been entered on the list of children,
in what is the logical place of birth.
